Reduce disposal costs
with HSM baling presses

Many companies generate packaging materials, films or other waste on a daily basis. This raises the question of how these residual materials should be disposed of. Only very few companies can process or recycle them directly themselves (e.g., through their own recycling or disposal facilities). Therefore, many businesses are looking for solutions that are practical and at the same time reduce disposal costs.

How does disposal logistics work in companies?

The recyclable materials generated can either be disposed of untreated directly in a container or other receptacle. These containers are usually rented and collected by external container services. Storing the recyclables until collection not only takes time, space and energy, but also costs money.
Therefore, it may be worthwhile to optimize your company’s disposal logistics to reduce your disposal costs. Balers can play a decisive role here. They can compress recyclables so they can be reintroduced into the recycling cycle.

Below, we present the advantages of balers and give you tips for better waste management in your company.

How does a baling press work?

As the name suggests, balers are used to compress various residual materials into bales. This results in a compaction of the material, which ultimately saves space.

Depending on the type of residual materials to be pressed, different balers are required. However, the principle on which they operate generally remains the same:

  • Recyclable materials such as cardboard are placed into the baler without being shredded.
  • Once the baler is completely filled, the pressing process can be started automatically or manually.
  • The residual materials are compressed inside the baler into compact bales. These can be stacked and stored or transported in a space-saving manner.

Optimize disposal processes with balers

The use of baling presses offers a wide range of advantages. They help you efficiently optimize your disposal process, save space, reduce disposal costs, and support energy savings in your operations. This way, you can make your disposal process sustainable.

Sustainable waste management, but space-saving

In almost every company, packaging materials, films or other waste are generated that need to be disposed of. These are usually stored for a certain period and then disposed of collectively. However, recyclable materials such as cardboard and film require a lot of storage space. If the residual materials are collected by a disposal service provider, this usually happens at defined intervals. Until then, the expensive storage space remains blocked.

Presses reduce the volume of recyclable materials by up to 95%!

By using a baling press, the volume of recyclable materials can be reduced by up to 95 percent. This means that less storage space is required, saving valuable warehouse space that would otherwise be occupied by bulky packaging materials.

If companies use containers for the disposal of their residual materials, these are usually located outside the building or at a distance due to space constraints – at least not where the waste is generated. This not only means long walking distances to the container, but also open doors and ramps to access these containers. A baling press can be installed and used directly at the point where the waste is generated. This prevents energy loss through open doors and ramps and avoids occupying expensive storage space.

Reduce disposal costs: advantages of baling presses

By using a baling press, you not only save storage space. You can also reduce costs: companies usually have to pay rental fees for a disposal container provided by a service company. Since a baling press compresses recyclables directly into compact bales, a disposal container for storing uncompressed residual materials is no longer necessary.

Employee walking times to transport recyclables to the collection point or disposal container are also eliminated thanks to the use of a baling press. The press is located exactly where the waste is generated. This means significant time savings for employees – you can save hours on disposal.

In addition, using a baling press can reduce disposal costs during the transport of recyclables. The compacted bales not only save storage space but also ensure optimal truck utilization. Depending on the material being pressed, up to 54 bales can be transported in a 24-ton articulated truck. A disposal container holds, depending on its size, around 200 kilograms of material. This container also needs to be collected and transported by a truck. The frequency of these truck trips is therefore many times higher when using a disposal container compared to using a baling press.

Energy savings in industry with baling presses

By using a baling press, CO₂ emissions can be reduced. The compressed recyclable bales ensure optimal utilization of a truck for transport. This reduces the number of necessary truck trips, which in turn lowers CO₂ emissions. Considering that the CO₂ emissions for disposing of 300 tons of uncompressed material amount to 5,640 kilograms, while for 300 tons of compressed bales it is only 1,920 kilograms, everything speaks in favor of compacting recyclables with a baling press. This CO₂ reduction also lowers the company’s costs for truck transport.

Another energy-saving feature is the rapid stroke technology developed by HSM for its baling presses. Thanks to this technology, the baling presses operate particularly energy-efficiently and effectively. This means the press requires a lower starting current, has a cycle time reduced by up to 40 percent, and despite higher throughput, consumes up to 40 percent less energy compared to conventional drives.

Using a baling press not only reduces energy consumption and enables cost savings for your company, but also protects the environment. Optimizing your disposal processes with a baling press pays off twice.

Disposal and logistics: additional revenue with baling presses

The use of a baling press pays off not only through cost, energy, or CO₂ savings. In sustainable waste management, there is also the possibility of generating additional revenue. By compacting, homogeneous recyclable bales are produced. These can be reintroduced into the recycling cycle as secondary raw materials.

Secondary raw materials are used in the production of new raw materials. For example, in 2018, the recovered paper utilization rate in Germany for the production of paper, cardboard, and cartons was 75 percent. For the production of newsprint and corrugated base paper, the share of recovered paper used in 2018 was even 100 percent. This makes homogeneous recyclable bales a valuable commodity.

Optimize disposal processes with HSM baling presses

Baling presses offer your company excellent opportunities to redesign your waste management in a new and more sustainable way. They help reduce your disposal costs and save energy and working time. In addition, baling presses can even become an additional source of income: pressed, segregated bales can be reused as valuable secondary raw materials.

HSM provides you with the right baler, no matter what materials you need to process or how much space you have available. Discover the range of baling presses from HSM.
